A new hydropower plant for Zimbabwe

Gugler Water Turbines GmbH is pleased to announce the successful commissioning of the Great Zimbabwe Hydropower plant at the dam wall of Lake Mutiriki in Zimbabwe. Officially completed in November 2024, this project represents a significant milestone in expanding Zimbabwe’s renewable energy capacity.

The plant features two 2,7 MW Francis turbines, providing a total power output of 5,4 MW. Each turbine operates at a flow rate of 6.25 m³/s and will contribute approximately 0.5% to Zimbabwe’s national power demand.

In addition to enhancing the national grid, this hydropower project is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 11,100 tons annually, supporting Zimbabwe’s transition toward a more sustainable energy future.
